Do you talk like a baby to your 2 and a half year old? Fault ! In any case, the opinion of American scientists who believe that children of this age understand very well what they are told, according to a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS) and identified by Health Log.
To reach this conclusion, the researchers observed the behavior of 140 children aged over 2.5 years through a simplified experience based on the “false belief task” methodology. This technique allows to appreciate the development of a child by testing his ability to understand that a person may have a different opinion of his.
In practice, the children listened to the story of a young woman who found an apple in a bowl and decided to put it in a box. But while she was playing ball, her brother finds the apple and takes it. After asking two questions about the association between an object and the image to the child, he is asked if the young woman will look in the box or bowl to find her apple. And it turns out that children over two and a half understand very well that one person may have different beliefs than another. On the other hand, they can not express their answer because of the excess of data to be processed. It is only around the age of 4 or 5 that children respond correctly. Thus, children over 2 and a half years are perfectly able to detect people who lie, cheat or pretend.
